Mt. Starr 12,832′

Mt. Starr – aka Pointless Peak

Location: Rock Creek near Mammoth
Summit Elevation: 12,832′
Elevation Change: 4,000′

I’m reposting an old one from sometime  in the early 2000’s. I was knocking out the ski tours in the John Moynier Guidebook and skied this one with John and Kristie. He blew us away as usual, while I raced with Kristie. We were neck and neck, fully competing with each other to be the second one at the top. Get this old guidebook, probably out of print now by Falcon. There was some useful description of this peak but you’ll pretty much just go up and down by sight. There are plenty of gullies and you’ll choose by desired aspect. I believe we skied the south side in corn conditions in late season. Mt. Starr is the first peak to ski as you tour into Little Lakes Valley from Rock Creek lake. You’ll have to skin 3 miles of groomed XC on the highway to Rock Creek first. Bring kicker skins for this. I’ll have to keep looking for more pics from this fun day. I think they were slides though.
